ChatGPT drops its referral tags and your AI traffic looks direct

ChatGPT stopped labelling its own referrals, so a slice of your AI traffic is now filed as direct. New first-party research on 66.6 million ChatGPT responses shows only 14.4% trigger a web search at all, and when one runs it often goes straight to the brand's own domain. Also in this edition: agent payment data at sub-10-cent ticket sizes, a new crawling API that ignores JavaScript, and Google putting URL keywords back in their place.

This Week's Signals

1

GPT-6 strips ChatGPT's referral tags, so AI visits file as direct

Source: Search Engine Roundtable ↗

Why it matters for your score

If you track AI traffic by the utm_source=chatgpt.com tag, your numbers dropped for a measurement reason and not a demand reason, so check direct traffic on the same pages before you change anything.

2

Only 14.4% of ChatGPT answers trigger a web search, and the searches hunt brand sites

Source: Ahrefs ↗

Why it matters for your score

When ChatGPT does go looking, it goes looking for the official page, so your pricing, variant and support pages on your own domain carry more weight than another explainer post.

3

Chainalysis counts 138 million agent payments on x402, 87% of them 10 cents or less

Source: CoinDesk ↗

Why it matters for your score

Agents buy in tiny increments and buy often, which argues for per-request pricing on anything you expose to them rather than a monthly seat.

4

SerpApi ships an Extract API that crawls 100 pages a request and runs no JavaScript

Source: PPC Land ↗

Why it matters for your score

Fetchers that skip JavaScript see an empty page where your client-rendered content should be, so anything you want quoted has to be in the server-rendered HTML.

5

Google says keywords in your URL are an incredibly small signal

Source: Search Engine Roundtable ↗

Why it matters for your score

Renaming URLs for keywords is not where your next citation comes from, and the migration risk usually costs more than the signal is worth.

6

OpenAI is assigning human account managers to ChatGPT advertisers

Source: Search Engine Roundtable ↗

Why it matters for your score

Paid placement inside ChatGPT is becoming a managed channel with reps and biweekly reviews, which is a different budget line from being recommended for free.

Emerging Audit Signals

Measurement is the weakest link in AI discoverability right now.

Referrer tags, third-party rank data and Search Console date ranges have all broken inside 2 weeks, and none of the breaks were announced.

Attribution keeps moving in the platform's favour.

Tags appear, tags disappear, and site owners find out from somebody else's traffic dashboard rather than from a changelog.

AI answers are drifting toward official sources.

Brand-owned pages, regulators and research bodies are gaining citations while explainers, encyclopedias and marketplaces lose them.

Agent behaviour is high frequency and low value wherever you measure it.

The payment data and the crawl data tell the same story: many small requests, rarely a visit back.

Crawling is being sold as a product.

Extraction endpoints, index pipelines and scraping APIs now bill by the page, and most of them still do not run JavaScript.

What to do this week

  1. 1

Put last week's direct traffic next to your ChatGPT referral numbers, segmented by landing page. If direct rose on the same pages that lost ChatGPT visits, the traffic did not leave, it lost its label.

  2. 2

Load your 3 highest-intent pages with JavaScript disabled. Whatever disappears is invisible to the fetchers that quote you. Faro's /tools/ai-readiness-scan checks server-rendered gaps in one pass if you would rather not do it by hand.

  3. 3

Write the official page an agent is already looking for: current pricing, variants, availability and support terms, on your own domain, server rendered. ChatGPT's own searches go after brand sites by name, so make the answer findable there.
