Agents start phoning businesses as Google rewrites your local listing

Two AI agents learned to place phone calls to businesses this week, and Google started presenting local business panels as AI Overviews. Both move the first contact with a customer somewhere you do not control.

This Week's Signals

1

AI agents start making phone calls to businesses

Why it matters for your score

Your phone line is now an agent endpoint. If a bot calling on a customer's behalf cannot get a price, an opening time or a booking out of whoever answers, it moves on to the business that can.

Google turns the local knowledge panel into an AI Overview

Why it matters for your score

Google is writing your business description from whatever it can read about you. The fix sits upstream, in your Business Profile fields and the third-party pages that describe what you sell.

3

Google extends aggregator and supplier units to local business queries

Why it matters for your score

In the EEA you now appear either as a direct supplier or inside someone else's aggregator listing. Which one you get depends on how clearly your site identifies you as the source.

4

Merchant Center adds UCP cart transfer, identity linking and analytics

Why it matters for your score

The handoff from an AI shopping surface to your checkout is becoming configurable and measurable. Merchants who set it up get attributed sales instead of impressions they cannot trace.

5

Anthropic folds Claude's agent workspace into the chat window

Why it matters for your score

Asking about vendors and acting on the answer now happen in the same window. Being findable at the question stage is what puts you inside the task that follows.

6

Google's ad tech business goes under a six-year court monitor

Source: Search Engine Land ↗

Why it matters for your score

No breakup, so paid distribution stays roughly where it is for years. The real shift in where buyers start is happening on the AI and organic side, not in the courts.

Emerging Audit Signals

Discovery keeps moving to surfaces you do not control: a phone call, an AI Overview, a checkout inside someone else's app.

Google ships agent commerce plumbing faster than most merchants wire up the basics, so the gap between capable and configured keeps widening.

Your business description is increasingly assembled by a model reading third-party sources rather than written by you.

Assistant surfaces are consolidating.

Fewer places to be found, each handling more of the path from question to purchase.

What to do this week

  1. 1

Phone your own listed number and time how long it takes to get a price, an opening time and a booking. An agent calling for a customer will not sit through a menu tree.

  2. 2

Pull up your own local panel in Google and read the AI description of your business. Then fix what it drew from: Business Profile categories, your about page, and the directories that describe you.

  3. 3

If you sell online in the US, check the UCP settings in Merchant Center for cart transfer and identity linking now rather than in December. Run an AI readiness scan at /tools/ai-readiness-scan first if you are not sure what agents can currently read from your product pages.
