Agents start filing the paperwork as AI Mode absorbs more demand

Agent traffic changed direction this week. New research across 11 jurisdictions finds AI tools driving a surge of machine-authored applications and complaints into public institutions, which is the first serious evidence that agents generate inbound volume rather than only consuming your pages. Meanwhile Google folded another seasonal vertical into AI Mode, shipped a Business Profile metric with no API behind it, and confirmed it will not backfill a missing month of indexing data. The pattern underneath all three: you are being measured by machines more often, and getting fewer reliable numbers about it.

This Week's Signals

1

AI agents are flooding public institutions with legitimate claims

Why it matters for your score

Researcher Chris Schmitz analysed 84 cases across 11 jurisdictions and found AI tools removing the administrative friction that used to suppress claims. UK housing ombudsman complaints went from 2,600 in 2022 to over 7,000 last year, and the US Consumer Financial Protection Bureau saw 5x growth. Most submissions are valid. If your intake forms, quote requests and support queues assume a human on the other end, plan for well-formed machine-authored volume instead.

Google routes seasonal running demand into AI Mode and its Shopping Graph

Why it matters for your score

Google published a race-prep guide on 10 September bundling AI Mode training plans, playlists and gear discovery drawn from a Shopping Graph of over 60 billion product listings. No new technology, just another category of high-intent seasonal demand landing on a monetised conversational surface. Your feed data decides whether you appear there. Your landing page copy does not.

3

Google adds post view counts to Business Profile, with no API access

Source: PPC Land ↗

Why it matters for your score

Announced 10 September in the Small Business Bulletin and rolling out globally, the metric covers an 18 month window and combines Search and Maps views per post. It is dashboard only. If you run multiple locations or report for clients, this is a number you collect by hand or do not collect at all.

4

Google confirms it will not backfill the missing June indexing data

Source: Search Engine Roundtable ↗

Why it matters for your score

John Mueller confirmed the page indexing report simply was not updated during a June delay, and said Google does not back-fill indexing data. Your index coverage history now has a hole in it. Record the gap before someone reads it as a crawl problem in the next quarterly review.

Emerging Audit Signals

Agent traffic is turning bidirectional.

For two years the concern was agents reading your site without sending anyone back. The volume now moving the other way, as machine-authored applications, complaints and requests, is the part almost no intake process was designed for.

Google keeps consolidating vertical demand onto surfaces it monetises.

Each guide and each bundled vertical moves another category of query into AI Mode, where feed completeness decides who gets named.

Measurement is thinning exactly as it matters more.

A missing month of indexing data, a metric with no API, and Mueller saying position 1 to 10 is hard to map all point the same way: fewer trustworthy numbers about how machines see you.

Structured product data is doing the work page copy used to do.

A complete Shopping Graph entry now behaves more like a ranking asset than a catalogue record.

What to do this week

  1. 1

Pressure-test your intake. Take your main contact form, quote request or support queue and ask what happens if 200 well-formed, entirely valid submissions arrive in an hour. Validation rules and rate limits written for humans will either block legitimate agents or let a flood straight through.

  2. 2

Audit your product feed for completeness before the holiday cycle starts. Missing variants, stale pricing and absent inventory status are what keep you out of AI Mode shopping answers. Fix the feed before you touch the copy.

  3. 3

Export your Search Console page indexing data this week and annotate the June gap in your own records, so a reporting hole does not get read as a ranking decline later.

  4. 4

Confirm the AI crawlers you actually want are not blocked by default at your CDN or in robots.txt. Crawl access remains the single largest lever on whether you can be cited at all, and it is check one in the readiness scan at /tools/ai-readiness-scan.
